Running in the Sun!

Phase Two enjoyed their Sports Day at Brickfields Athletics Arena with a variety of running, jumping and throwing events followed by Race 4 Life in aid of Cancer Research UK, in the afternoon. Our amazing sports leaders from Phase Four supported the day by delivering each of the stations as well as motivating the students to ensure they had a fun and enjoyable experience.

Phase Two Sports Day July 2019

Race For Life

During the afternoon of Phase Two sports day the students participated in the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK. In the run up to the event the students worked hard to to gain sponsorship money in order to raise as much money as they could for Cancer Research. The students wore ‘I race for’ cards, which they individually created to show who they dedicated their race too. With this cause being so close to all our hearts at this present time, it was amazing to see the students show their support to those individuals, as well as their smiling faces and sense of achievement when crossing the finishing line!
Our fundraising target this year was to raise £1,000 and our school community have raised an amazing £2,109.41!!
Therefore, over the last two years on sport day our school community has raised over £4,600!
We will continue to support and raise money for Cancer Research UK next year.
What a brilliant effort from everyone and a massive thank you to the Cancer Research team who volunteered to assist with the event!

Check out this lineup of awesome events happening as part of Making Waves.

The Barge 48 hour residential as a thank you for supporting the Project, giving you the opportunity to learn to run a boat, be like a pirate, prepare meals and work as a team. No wifi, no electricity, no running water- but time, the environment, the peace, the fun. This experience continues to be a massive, but quiet element of the Project and we are so thrilled that so many families once having experienced the Barge are now signing up to volunteer to help with other sessions. What a wonderful pay it forward ethos. Many Thanks to Barbara, Dom and their crew. Barge trips continue into the autumn.

Surfing at Discovery Surf, Bigbury- we have stopped for the summer, due to the small waves and the small lanes! But surfing will continue for a couple of sessions in the Autumn Term, mini bus transfers are provided from the school, and the experience of all participants has been great- even using instructor Harry the Bear to stand up.

RYA qualifications in sailing, with Plymouth Youth Sailing (PYS) are available through the Project- courses for adults and children (same day, same time, same place, but different groups) are available throughout the summer holidays. Membership to PYS is paid through the Project, and once a member you can continue to sail all year round (on a Sunday morning when the weather is kind in the winter) for more information contact [email protected] mentioning Making Waves Together.

Our third block of beginner swimmers are about to finish their 12 week course of swimming. Registration for block 4, starting in the Autumn is virtually full, but if you are interested in beginner swimmer lessons, please contact Tors. We are starting an adult beginner and nervous swimmer block for parents, this is still at the early stages but if you would like some information, please let Tors know.

As well as follow on sessions after Taster Days from the Mount Batten Centre (MBC), more dates coming in the early autumn for this, but we are also able to paddle from Tinside Beach with MBC staff over the holidays, giving you a different paddling experience. There is a min age for this due to the use of SUPs, most spaces have gone, but please contact Tors to be on a reserve list.

Anti-Tombstoning/Water Lining Event. On a quiet Sunday afternoon at West Hoe, 48 people braved water lining- tight rope walking, over water! Focusing on safe water entry, supported by  local police officers and Lifeboat crew, people were encouraged to develop safe water entry skills- do not pencil jump in, check the tides, check the depth of the water. It was a wonderful day with a lot of success and still with an adrenalin buzz. More water lining will be taking place at the Waterfront Harbour on 3rd and 4th August with Plymouth City Council.
New this year- a SUP and Safety session.

New this year- a SUP and Safety session.  Looking at Coastal Surveillance, keeping yourselves, your family and other beach users safe. We have targeted Mum’s/Female carers/guardians, but we will be rolling this out to all Project families. You have an on-the-water session if the weather allows, followed by a session looking at the risks and dangers of the beach, coast and sea and how to keep safe.

To be involved in the Project you have to live in PL1, PL2 or have a child at PSCA, but you do not need to be confident in or around the water, we will help you develop that. If you wish to give anything a go, please contact Tors.

On Friday 12th July five of our phase four students went to TR2 to take part in Beyond Face’s industry day. Beyond Face are a performance company based in Plymouth whose mission is to raise the profile and visibility of people of colour in the arts. The day gave our students the opportunity to meet and partake in a number workshops and discussions led by industry professionals including: actors, playwrights, dancers, directors and artistic directors. Students were also able to connect with local young people from across the city.

“It was intriguing to hear everyone’s stories and learn about their backgrounds” – Solomon Darbo

“It made me aware how my skin colour could effect my future career as an actor. It was also refreshing to hear peoples’ stories.” – Nichole Gomez

Brian Herdman and Steve Spence are two popular and well-established local poets from Plymouth’s ever-burgeoning literary scene. Both are incredibly talented writers, who generously gave their time to come into the school and share some of their work and methods of writing with the year sevens, and to answer a variety of their questions. Brian gave the children lots to think about in terms of reaching for a rhythm in their work, and how poetry can be used to connect with our own feelings, but can also help us relate to the feelings of others. Steve showed them the fun that can be had with wordplay and the “sound” of poetry.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the year seven to pick up on and identify some of the poetic devices they’ve been learning about, such as repetition and alliteration for effect, as well as to actually see poetry being performed by poets, which is what they have all been working towards to the end of the summer term – hopefully ready to present for PSCA’s summer exhibition.

As you will know, the money raised through various fundraising efforts has meant that we can develop our playground into a more purposeful, social and educational space. It has made us immensely proud to see our dreams becoming a reality, and the children have loved seeing the work being carried out. Thank you for your patience around pick up time, where this has been a little harder over the last few days. We look forwards to the children being able to use this space daily!

Grand Opening Event

For those of you who chose the reward on the Crowdfunder which invited you to the grand opening event, we propose this will take place on Friday 13th September as a way of celebrating what we have achieved and the new academic year.
