Millbay Academy students have succeeded again at the Shine School Media Awards!
The Shine Media Awards is a huge part of our academic year and the place to kick start a career in the media industry. The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers (they established Copyright law 600yrs ago) run Shine to encourage budding journalists and publishers into the industry. It is sponsored by huge companies such as Getty, Hearst, Google, TES, The Daily Mail and The Telegraph to name a few. Recognition here could really kick start a career.
The photography and media students were hard at work during the spring term putting together issue four of TiNT magazine. We were just gearing up to head to London for Tate Exchange and drafting out articles when the rug got pulled out from under us. Working remotely hit us hard, all of our kit and resources were stuck in school but we persevered and managed to submit a digital copy of the magazine. On Monday at 2.30, the award ceremony was published online and we watched with bated breath via Zoom. It was a shame we couldn’t be in London like previous years, it’s such a spectacle being at Stationers Hall.
We were nominated for: Best Print and Design, Best Magazine Cover, Best Photograph, Best Community and Environmental initiative and Best Magazine. We were up against some of the country’s best schools for these awards (have a look at the list!) and to our delight, Maria gained a highly recommended award for her ‘Submerged in the Bath’ image. The award was sponsored by Getty and is a huge accolade to her. Huge well done to Maria and here’s looking to going bigger and better for Shine 2021! https://www.shine-schoolawards.org/shine-2020-winners/ (Maria’s award is at 29 mions aprox into the video)
