As part of our work in developing cross curricular skills and links with the wider community our year 11 students had the opportunity to visit the building site across the road. This was a mammoth logistical exercise as it involved taking the whole of year 11 in groups of 20. As we all needed to be wearing hard hats and high vis jackets this was a great feat of teamwork amongst the whole of year 11.
The students were given a talk on the future of the building, which will provide housing for the over 55s. This is a venture run by a charity so there will be many career opportunities in care, catering, management etc.
In the afternoon the students had the opportunity to meet people from several areas of the building trade, including designers, architects, planners and site managers.
The students really enjoyed being able to find out about potential careers and it was useful to build links with industry.
Following on from this we have been offered several opportunities for work experience and also some clear and useful advice surrounding apprenticeships. We will obviously be continuing our links with “Building Plymouth” and hopefully will be able to develop our work with them in order to support all of our students with their next steps.
