It is with huge sadness that we must announce that Mike Beard, Deputy Headteacher at Plymouth School of Creative Arts, has died. Mike was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and in spite of fighting and remaining incredibly positive over the past few months, he passed away on Wednesday 27th November. All our thoughts are with his family.
For many of our students and staff, Mike was one of the first faces they saw on their very first day at school – in some cases before the Red House had even been built.
Mike‘s presence has been a fundamental part of our school’s journey since the very start and it feels like he is part of the very fabric of the building. We will be forever grateful for the leadership, guidance and support he has shown our staff, students and families over the past 7 years.
When the time is right for Mike’s family and our school community we will organise an event to celebrate Mike’s life and find the best way we can to honour his amazing contribution to Plymouth School of Creative Arts.
Thank you for your understanding and support at this very difficult time.
At Our Roots…..
Preschool had an idea a few weeks ago to paint a tree on our street side window. Our vision was to enable the children to follow the seasons throughout the year, making and creating foliage and animals, all centred around the tree.
Following the original idea, artist in residence and art teacher Jeff kindly volunteered to help us and started to work his wonders on the window, and then following the incredibly sad news about Mike; Rosie and I asked him to include Mike’s name somewhere in our tree, we decided that amongst the roots would be most appropriate.
Here are some photos that we wanted to share with you. It’s even better in real life, and at night the light shines beautifully on it. If you get a chance, maybe walk that way past the school.
