Happy New Year!

In less than 2 years the Making Waves Project has managed to get over 100 families together and on the water. Whether it is surfing, sailing, paddling, swimming or the Barge residential- friendships have been formed, new interests have been sparked and I am delighted to stay that healthy family activity is still central to the heart of what we do.

Please share your positive experiences of the Project with me!

Our match funding from Sport England was focused on active family time on the water, but with that funding finishing in March 2021 we are already looking at how we can continue the project. Therefore if you have any stories from personal experience about health, school attendance or attainment, any social impacts or even family outcomes and you wouldn’t mind sharing them with me, please email me with them, thank you.

2020 Taster days/follow on sessions in sailing and paddling

We have Taster Days for families that have yet to try sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding at the Mount Batten Centre with our delivery partners Plymouth Youth Sailing (PYS) and the Mount Batten Centre (MBC) on Sat 18th April, Sat 16th May, Sat 28th June and Sat 18th July. These days are perfect for new families to the project but also swimming families once the children are more confident in the water. Please note minimum age for sailing and kayaking is 6, for stand up paddle boarding it is 11 for the single boards and 7 for the giant board.

We will have dates for follow on sessions for sailing and paddling, so once you have attended a taster day you can continue to develop your skills, techniques and confidence. Then PYS will be running sailing qualifications, that will be available throughout the year as well.

Surfing

We will be returning to Bigbury, to work with the great team at Discovery Surf School- starting in April and continuing until October (please note there will be no surfing in the school holidays), minimum age 6, but you must be water confident and able to swim 50m.

Barge Residential Weekend

As a thank you to the families that support the Project, if you sign up and attend the Taster Days and follow on sessions, you are a swimming family or you attend regular winter sessions, you have the chance to have a weekend residential on our restored Barge. The Lynher Barge is a beautiful opportunity to spend some time with your family with no electricity, in the fresh Cornish air, preparing meals, learning how to work the boat, fishing, tying knots, teamwork, sleeping in a hammock, using compost toilets, the experience is a fantastic one and creates some lifelong memories.

Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons for beginner children and adults at the Life Centre on a Sunday evening, continues all year (excluding the summer holidays). Jordan our swimming teacher continues to allow each of our beginners the opportunity to develop and strive to their potential.

Sea Swimming

Sea swimming is gaining in popularity and although you may feel it isn’t for you- you can now try! For PL1 and PL2 families and families with children at PSCA. In 2020 we will be working with Ace Swimming introducing you to the physical and mental benefits of sea swimming, right here in Plymouth Sound. You do need to be a confident swimmer, I can talk to you about the criteria, you do need a wetsuit- a supermarket one is just fine, and you do need to be able to listen to instructions and follow them. We will be looking at offering 3 sessions- one for children, ideally aged 10 years old plus, one for teens, and an adult session. Dates and information to come, but if you are interested please email Tors tfroud@psca.co.uk

Can't wait to see you all on and off the water.
